Hydro-Mechanical Drilling Jars

  • The HMJ is typically operated in the latched position to reduce unexpected jarring while drilling and to eliminate movement between jar components, increasing service life.
  • The HMJ operates with a simple up-and-down motion and is unaffected by torque.
  • The spline drive and latch mechanism are enclosed in a single sealed oil chamber without ports to the annulus, preventing issues such as cuttings filling ports, which may restrict the down jar stroke in other designs.
  • The hydraulic delay mechanism is located in a separate chamber to prevent contamination and enhance reliability.
  • When the latch mechanism is in the cocked or latched position, the inner mandrel and outer housing act integrally, virtually eliminating seal and inner tool wear during normal drilling conditions. There is no need to extend or open the jar before running it in the hole.
  • Standard seals in the tool are effective up to 250 °F (120 °C). The jar can be fitted with seals effective up to 400 °F (200 °C) for high-temperature environments. External sealing surfaces are tungsten carbide-coated to enhance wear and corrosion resistance.
  • The HMJ can be run in tension or compression within the preset latch settings.


The Maple Leaf Energy Services Ltd.’s Hydraulic-Mechanical Jar (HMJ) is a double-acting drilling jar designed to deliver hydraulic delay when jarring in the up direction and mechanical release when jarring in the down direction. The HMJ incorporates a latch mechanism to keep the jar locked in the neutral position, eliminating unexpected jarring when tripping or racking back in the derrick.

Tapered Blade Reamers

Reamers are available in 6-blade or 3-blade designs. Both designs include deep flutes for improved hole cleaning. They are manufactured with DS40 or 4FH connections. These reamers have a counter-spiraling design to reduce the risk of corkscrewing during reaming, creating a smoother and more accessible wellbore. Designed for reaming while drilling or for dedicated reamer runs.

EasyRide Shock subs

The Easy Ride™ is a short, double-acting tool placed in the BHA between the motor and MWD collar. Easy Ride™ is cut to accommodate a float and has a nominal length, shoulder to shoulder, of 5.3 feet. When added to the BHA, it eliminates the need for a standalone float sub, increasing the survey point-to-bit distance by approximately 2.5 feet. Adding Easy Ride™ to the BHA reduces shock and vibration generated by aggressive drill bit and power section combinations, which negatively affect MWD tool string performance. As a result, it improves MWD reliability, reduces NPT, and saves time and money.
